Moving to Huntsville, Alabama for Redstone Arsenal? Know Your Gate Before You Choose Your Home

If you're moving to Huntsville, Alabama for a Redstone Arsenal job, find out which gate you'll use before you pick a town. West-side Gates 7 and 9 point toward Madison, West Huntsville, Athens, and Decatur. East-side Gates 1, 3, 8, and 10 point toward South Huntsville, Jones Valley, and Hampton Cove.

Most people relocating to North Alabama start with the city. Should we live in Huntsville, Madison, Athens, or Decatur? For a Redstone Arsenal job, that can be the wrong first question.

Redstone Arsenal is huge. A house that looks 15 minutes from work on a map can turn into a 30- or 40-minute commute, depending on where your building is, which gate you use, and what traffic looks like when everybody else is trying to get on post at the same time. I've lived in North Alabama for more than 50 years, and this is the first thing I want you to figure out before you look at a single house.

Start With Two Questions, Not a City

"I work at Redstone Arsenal" doesn't tell me much. The gates are spread around different sides of the Arsenal and different sides of Huntsville, and getting through the gate isn't the end of your drive. Depending on where your building is, you may still have several minutes of driving inside the Arsenal.

So before you start house hunting, ask your employer, sponsor, or unit two questions:

1. What building will I be working in?

2. What gate do most people in that building normally use?

Those two answers can completely change where I'd tell you to look. If you work early mornings or unusual shifts, your gate matters even more, because not every gate keeps the same hours.

Where the Redstone Arsenal Gates Are

Gate 9 is the main gate and one of the busiest, off I-565 at Rideout Road by Research Park.

Gate 7 is on the west side, off Zierdt Road and Martin Road, toward Madison.

Gate 1 is also on Martin Road, but on the east side of the Arsenal, off the Parkway.

Gate 8 is at the corner of Drake Avenue and Patton Road, where it turns into Goss Road.

Gate 10 is a little farther south on Patton Road.

Gate 3 is in South Huntsville on Redstone Road, near Hobbs Island Road.

The Surprise at Zierdt Road

Look at a map and you'd assume there's an I-565 exit at Zierdt Road to get you to Gate 7. There isn't. Right now, take the Town Madison exit, cut through Town Madison to Zierdt Road, and head south to Martin Road and Gate 7. It works fine once you know it, but it surprises a lot of newcomers.

Gate Hours (Check These Before You Buy)

Here's what the gate schedules looked like when I recorded the video. They change, so always confirm current hours on the official Redstone Arsenal site (https://home.army.mil/redstone/) before you plan a commute around them.

Gate 9: open 24/7, including federal holidays. The Visitor Control Center there is open 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and closed on federal holidays.

Gate 1: Monday through Friday, inbound 5:30 AM to 1:00 PM, outbound only 1:30 to 9:00 PM. Closed on several holidays.

Gate 3: 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, Monday through Friday. Closed on federal holidays.

Gate 7: inbound only 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM, outbound only 1:30 to 9:00 PM.

Gate 8: 1:45 PM to 9:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM Saturday and Sunday.

Gate 10: 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

On weekends, Gate 9 and Gate 8 are your only two ways in.

Gates 7 and 9: Madison, West Huntsville, and Athens

If you're coming in through Gate 7 or Gate 9, you have a lot of options. Madison is usually the first town people mention, and it's popular for a reason. You're close to the Arsenal, and shopping and restaurants are right there. The trade-off is price. You'll usually pay a little more for the same house in Madison than in the surrounding communities.

Don't assume every Madison address gives you the same commute, though. Living five or ten miles farther west or north changes things once traffic builds, especially up near Highway 72 by Clift Farm, which can get congested.

West Huntsville may be the easiest answer if commute is your top priority. You're close to Research Park, I-565, and the west side of Redstone, and depending on the neighborhood you can reach your gate without fighting through half the metro first.

Athens, a little farther west and north of Madison, usually comes up when buyers see Madison prices. You'll generally get more house for the money, and there's a lot of newer construction. But you'll often still be fighting I-565 traffic, or Highway 72 through Madison. Athens can look closer on a map than it drives.

Decatur, Priceville, and Hartselle

Decatur is where I live, so yes, I'm a little biased. If you're using a west-side gate, I think it belongs on your list. You can often get more house for your money than in Madison, and you've got the Tennessee River, Point Mallard, and a downtown that keeps getting better. From downtown Decatur to Gate 9 is about 24 miles, so plan on roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. The I-565 drive and the river bridges can back up, but a lot of people are happy to trade that for a slower pace and a lower cost of living. Gate 7 works too: take the Town Madison exit, cut through to Zierdt Road, and head south to Martin Road.

Here's the one most relocation videos skip. Gate 3 can work from Decatur. Take Upper River Road east, pick up US-231 south of the river, and go straight up the Parkway to Gate 3. Plan on 45 to 50 minutes, but it's a pretty drive and you keep moving, without the stop-and-go you get on I-565.

Near Decatur, Priceville has about the same drive time to Gates 7 and 9, and Hartselle adds roughly 10 minutes. Both can also use the Upper River Road route to Gate 3.

North of Huntsville: Harvest to New Market

Harvest, Meridianville, Moores Mill, Hazel Green, and New Market funnel easily down to Gate 9. They're also a straight shot down the Parkway to the east-side gates, so they can sit in the middle depending on where you work.

Gates 1, 3, 8, and 10: South Huntsville and Hampton Cove

If you'll come in on the east side off the Parkway, this is where South Huntsville starts looking really good. You'll find established neighborhoods right off the Parkway, with shopping and restaurants close by, especially near Jones Valley. Depending on your gate, your commute can be much shorter than someone driving in from Madison or farther west. Many of the homes are a little older, but they have a lot of character, and the area stays popular with people moving here.

Hampton Cove, Green Mountain, Brownsboro, Gurley, and the Owens Cross Roads area give you mountain views and some newer construction, especially if you're using Gates 1 or 3. Look at the route, not just the mileage. The Parkway, Governors Drive, and the roads around the mountain can back up, so 10 miles on one route isn't the same commute as 10 miles on another.

When I Wouldn't Live in Decatur

As a Decatur native, here's something a lot of Decatur folks won't tell you. If you'll be going through Gate 1 on Martin Road, off the middle of the Parkway, I wouldn't even look in Decatur. You'd cross the Tennessee River bridge both ways and then work your way across a big part of Madison and Huntsville just to reach the other side of the Arsenal. I'd say the same about Hartselle and Priceville, and Athens starts to become a stretch for Gate 1 too.

Three Things to Do Before You Make an Offer

1. Drive the commute when you'll actually be driving it. Don't check Google Maps at 2 in the afternoon and call it good. Drive it at 6:45 or 7:00 in the morning, then again around 4:30 or 5:00. You'll find the bottlenecks yourself: I-565, Memorial Parkway, the Tennessee River bridges, certain Madison intersections, and sometimes the gate itself. A 20-minute drive with no traffic isn't always a 20-minute commute. If you're moving from out of state and can't test every route, that's exactly what a local agent should help you evaluate.

2. Check the school zoning for the exact address. This catches people all the time. A Madison mailing address doesn't automatically mean Madison City Schools. That home may be zoned for Huntsville City or Madison County Schools, and you'll see similar situations in other parts of North Alabama. Don't rely on the city name in the listing.

3. Think past your first assignment. People around Redstone Arsenal move between contractors, programs, buildings, and sometimes completely different parts of the Arsenal. If two houses are close, think about which location still works if your job moves you three years from now. I wouldn't give up the life you want today over something that might happen later. Just put it on the list.

The Bottom Line

Don't start by asking whether to live in Huntsville, Madison, Athens, or Decatur. Start with where you're actually working on the Arsenal and which gate you'll use day in and day out. West side? Madison, West Huntsville, Athens, Decatur, and Hartselle all deserve a look. East side? South Huntsville, Jones Valley, Hampton Cove, and Gurley make a lot of sense. North of Huntsville falls somewhere in between. Your budget matters and your lifestyle matters, but your gate matters more than most people realize.
